Step 15: Utilities

This is an important step that can be overlooked. Call approximately 7-10 days prior to closing to transfer billing out of your name as of the closing date. When it comes to gas, water, and electricity, you do not want to shut off these utilities. If the utility company advises you that the buyers have not made the call to transfer services out of their name, please let us know.  We will follow up with the selling agent to be sure that it is taken care of on their end.  You’ll also want to call your TV/internet provider, as well.

If you are buying in a condo building, contact the HOA / or condo representation to advise them that you have sold your unit / home. They will then be in contact with the new owner.
